What does standard EN 13432:2002 provide for?

A 2013 decree imposed the obligation to market only and exclusively biodegradable and compostable shopping bags that comply with the 2002 UNI EN 13432 standard. Specifically, we are talking about the decree of the Minister of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea of 18 March 2013. This was published in the Official Journal and provides for sanctions for those who market non-compliant products from Euro 2,500.00 to Euro 25,000.00, increased up to Euro 100,000 if the violation concerns large quantities of bags.

According to European regulations, 'compostable' means a product that, once decomposed, is non-toxic to nature.

In particular, the requirements for a product to be considered 'compostable' and 'biodegradable' are as follows:

• the bag must degrade by 90% of its weight within a maximum of 6 months
• if the bag comes into contact with organic materials for a period of 3 months, its total mass must be for 90% made up of fragments smaller than 2 mm
• if the bag is composted, it must not adversely affect the composting result (i.e. must not be toxic to nature)
• there must be no, if not a low level, concentration of heavy metals
• Specific values such as pH, salt content, volatile solid elements, nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, etc. must be within precise limits set by regulations.

In this way, European standards ensure that the product does not pollute and is not toxic to humans or the environment.
